ARTIST STATEMENT / BIO
"In my practice, I have always worked with our contemporary society, as reflected in politics, new trends, or subcultures, among other things. There is a power and drive with new questions that I find exciting to work with, even if they may be phenomena or issues that I do not agree with, or even find repulsive. For a long time, the internet has played an important role in my process in various ways, and I have been working digitally in various ways since the 1990s. However, the outcome in my art varies depending on how the ideas/thoughts can best be expressed, which I see as a strength and a key to continuing to evolve. At the same time, sometimes a new process can be initiated by a new material instead of something that has happened in our contemporary society, and in that way, an idea about what I want to depict is developed.
I also work with the public space and its various architectural elements, mostly urban environments that are not always appreciated or are in-between spaces/places where most people do not frequent. Perhaps it is because in those places one can see all people but avoid being among them?"
Daniel Franzén was educated at Konstfack between 1997-2002 with six months of studies in Japan. He is one of the founders of TAF Architect Office, and since 2005 he has worked on his own contemporary architecture and design projects under the name Bunker Hill. In 2012, he created a gender-neutral anonymous alias to start working on more free art projects, and in 2019, he carried out a large public artistic installation in Härnösand. The same year, he revealed his alias in the major solo exhibition "Daniel & JAG" at Härnösands Konsthall, featuring over 100 works from the alias period. Franzén has received awards and been highly recognized in the design press for his design and architecture projects. Over the past ten years, Franzén has had several solo exhibitions and worked on public installations. Since 2018, he has been teaching at Konstfack and is represented by Galleri Duerr."
